In the BVI, Rooted in Nature

One of the many unique aspects of Oil Nut Bay, in the British Virgin Islands, is that it’s only accessible by boat or helicopter. The 400-acre resort community is perched at the far northeastern tip of the island of Virgin Gorda, completely surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.

Known as Wings, this 11-acre estate is perched atop a hill with stunning 180-degree water views. The villa, which is in the resort’s Estate neighborhood, has been thoughtfully sited to take advantage of the panoramic views and cooling ocean breezes. The property has an interesting configuration that offers both individual privacy and a community gathering place. There are six freestanding bedroom suites, each with its own plunge pool, outdoor shower, and luxurious ensuite along with a kitchenette and sitting area.

The seventh pod, which is known as The Nest, serves as the heart of the villa, with floor-to-ceiling windows and doors surrounding an expansive great room, dining room, gourmet kitchen, and office. There is also a tucked away chef’s kitchen here, along with a flex space that includes a Murphy bed and home office. Outdoors, an area known as “The Bird Bath” adds an outdoor dining area, an infinity pool, and plenty of lounging spots for conversation or reading. “The Perch” holds a lower patio, with a fire pit and seating for out-of-this-world stargazing. In total, Wings offers 9,513 square feet of indoor living space, with seven bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and one powder room, and another 14,159 square feet dedicated to the open-air living for which the Caribbean is famous. It’s just the spot for big family vacations, weddings, and corporate retreats.

Oil Nut Bay, which was created by entrepreneur David V. Johnson after he bought the land in 2008, boasts unparalleled amenities. The Marina Village has an overwater restaurant and bar, a marina, a suspended pool with hammocks and daybeds, a game room, a boutique, and a watersports center. Additional amenities include a recently reimagined beach club with three pools and a swim-up bar, a wellness center with a gym, and the overwater Sundara Spa + Studio — along with pickleball and tennis courts, the “Nut House Kids Club,” and two helipads.

Most visitors to Oil Nut Bay fly into the neighboring island of Tortola. From there, it’s a 30-minute boat ride or 10-minute helicopter ride to the island. Or visitors can fly into Saint Thomas, in the American Virgin Islands, and then it’s a 90-minute boat ride to Oil Nut Bay. Most people get around the resort on golf carts, and the villa offers a convenient golf cart garage for storage.
