Scale and Solace on the Jersey Shore

Live the good life at ocean’s edge — complete with a roof deck — in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey.

On the sandy shores of northern New Jersey, a few miles from where the Garden State’s coastline curves from Lower New York Bay to the Atlantic Ocean, lies Monmouth Beach. This delightful Monmouth County coastal community, along with neighboring Long Branch and Sea Bright, has long been a choice destination for solace by the sea. After the first railroad arrived in the mid-19th century, this bucolic stretch of the Shore attracted magnates and moguls of the Gilded Age — financier Jay Gould, toothpaste titan Bowles Colgate, apple baron Samuel Mott, and banker William Fargo, to name a few. Here, they built grand-scale summer getaways, often referred to as “cottages” in the tradition of the fabulous manses in Newport, Rhode Island. Many were situated right along Ocean Avenue, the beachfront thoroughfare that remains a coveted address today.

92 Ocean Avenue offers a contemporary take on these storied retreats. Spanning almost 6,000 square feet, this four-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath home — completed in 2005 — takes full advantage of its seaside location, resplendent with contemporary architectural flourishes and a flow that facilitates seamless indoor-outdoor living.

Entering on the first floor, the dramatic curving staircase commands immediate attention. The open-plan living and dining area has coffered ceilings, a fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows that flow directly into the kitchen. There’s also a den that’s perfect for smaller gatherings to watch movies, play games, or just relax. An attached three-stall garage provides ample space for the daily drivers, as well as a pack of classic beach cruisers to pedal up and down the shore, not to mention a veritable stockpile of beach chairs, umbrellas, and more. A state-of-the-art elevator serves all three levels of the house.

Upstairs, there’s an expansive, wraparound porch, perfectly positioned for watching the ocean waves gently lap against the shore. The primary suite has its own private deck — imagine sipping your coffee while watching the clouds roll over the sand and surf — and a palatial skylit bathroom, with a blissful multi-spray shower and a whirlpool soaking tub. Also here is a two-room home office with built-in shelving and a large picture window, welcoming the inspiring views you’d expect at a dreamy Jersey Shore beach house.

The best view, however, belongs to the true crown jewel of the house: a soaring roof deck that’s a private, all-access crow’s nest with vistas over the Atlantic in one direction and towards Shrewsbury Bay in the other, not to mention far-reaching panoramas up and down the beach.
