Last-Minute Summer Rentals

On Long Island's North Fork, 2600 Oregon Road in Mattituck enjoys views of surrounding vineyards.

Looking for a seasonal escape? It’s not too late to snag the perfect summer rental.

The official start of summer may be close, but don’t fret if you haven’t found your getaway quite yet. Whether you’re headed upstate, out east, or down the shore, these homes trade the hustle and bustle for hours spent on no one’s time but your own.

Here are a handful of listings still available in Corcoran markets throughout the Northeast and New England, from the Jersey Shore to Massachusetts (and everywhere in between).

New York’s Hudson Valley

The House: Your upstate dreams await at this marvelously restored country compound, centered around a swoon-worthy Greek Revival farmhouse dating to the 1790s. Intricate moldings, steam radiators, and abundant other period details fill the exquisite five-bedroom residence, which has a full-house generator should any summer storms stir up trouble. Lay out on the massive stone terrace by the salt water pool. Frolic through the groomed grounds, resplendent with lush plantings. Play ping-pong in the pool house. There are so many things to do without ever leaving the grounds.

The Place: Good things often come in small packages, and Stanfordville does well to prove that point. It’s just enough off the beaten path to feel distant in mind from today’s fast-paced times, yet close enough to the Taconic Parkway and other conveniences. The historic hamlet has a record store, a wine shop, a charming farm market, and antique dealers brimming with deals harder to find along the more pounded pavements of nearby towns.

The House: 4,500 square feet of farmhouse elegance and modern amenities, with a gunite pool out back to splash your cares away. The main house, completed in 1880 and thoughtfully renovated in 2010, boasts four en suite bedrooms and two half baths. A pool/guest house adds another 3,300 square feet, with one bedroom and two baths. It’s all surrounded by 43 acres of perennial gardens, two ponds, and trails.

The Place: Millbrook offers both tranquil seclusion and a lively social scene. In the village, you’ll find a range of elevated boutiques and some of the best restaurants in the area. Outside, you’ll find grand old estates, draws like Millbrook Winery and Innisfree Garden, and a rolling horse country. Best of all, Millbrook is conveniently located between other name-brand Hudson Valley towns, truly putting you at the center of it all.

The Jersey Shore

543 Brielle Road Manasquan, NJ 08736

The House: This lovely four-bedroom, three-bathroom house sleeps eight and has plenty of space for indoor-outdoor living: A ground-level outdoor bar has a beverage fridge and a TV (perfect for summer nights), the second floor has an oversized balcony, and there’s even an outdoor shower to rinse off the sand when coming off a day at the shore. The beach, by the way, is just three blocks away, and the rental includes four beach badges.

The Place: In addition to the usual Jersey Shore delights, Manasquan boasts a cute downtown featuring BookTowne (a well-stocked independent bookstore with a weekly story time for kids), a couple of art galleries, and the Algonquin Arts Theatre, which is putting on live versions of The Wizard of Oz and Rent this summer. Plus, there’s the Edgar Felix Bikeway, a 5.4-mile trail stretching from Manasquan to Allaire State Park.

57 Ocean Avenue Manasquan, NJ

The House: Two lush hydrangea bushes greet you at the entrance of this three-bedroom, two-bathroom Manasquan home. Enjoy summer hours effortlessly from a covered front porch or backyard patio. Worry not if it gets too hot, as the house has central air (not to mention a washer and a dryer). And if the group needs a break from a 24/7 diet of Shore pizza and ice cream, a full eat-in kitchen makes it easy to whip up meals. Meanwhile, the beach is only a few blocks beyond the front door.

The Place: Manasquan is a charming Jersey Shore beach town, and the mile-long stretch of beach is perfect for everything from surfing to simply lounging. At one end of the beach is Gee Gee’s Pizza, Grill, and Arcade, a quintessential part of the Manasquan experience since 1987 — whether you’re jonesing for a pork roll, a slice, an Italian ice, or the chance to earn enough tickets for a plush animal.

Shelter Island/The North Fork

A shingle-style home on the waterfront of West Neck Harbor in Shelter Island.

The House: Water comes with the lifestyle at this five-bedroom property on West Neck Harbor in Shelter Island, comprising a main house and a guest cottage that each blend throwback and modern styles. It has a private dock for plying tranquil swells and a gunite pool that is positively idyllic for a dip. If summer at that tempo still sounds a little too fast, slow things down even further and take a seat on the waterside porch as you gaze off into the horizon.

The Place: Island time is in full effect on Shelter Island, where the only way to get around is at a leisurely pace. There’s an almost otherworldly quality to the town, which has exactly zero traffic lights and is only reachable via ferry from Greenport or North Haven. Homes are charmingly glorious, beaches are mightily serene, and retail is famously nonexistent. You can’t do much better for a seasonal escape.

The House: This three-bedroom Mattituck farmhouse flaunts vintage character and a truly rare amenity, an in-ground pool with vineyard vistas. When finished staring off and dreaming of future vintages, the home’s vastly open plan atop hardwood floors and beneath beamed ceilings will draw you literally in with an irresistible air of communal warmth. Should the picturesque front porch not immediately seal the deal, the two-acre property’s proximity to beloved North Fork vineyards (including Rose Hill), farm stands, beaches, and more undoubtedly will.

The Place: Mattituck spans across the North Fork peninsula, touching the Great Peconic Bay, the Long Island Sound, and many smaller aquatic bodies in between. Naturally, activities like sailing, paddleboarding, and fishing come with the territory. Elsewhere, stop in at Love Lane, sample ample locally made goods, or delight in the annual Strawberry Festival. This hamlet brings the promises of a North Fork postcard to life, boasting seemingly endless enchantment across its verdant scenery.

Massachusetts’s South Shore

67 Border Street #Main Scituate

The House: The House on the Rock is a charming retreat and a vacation destination unto itself, boasting a waterfall, a tranquil pond, a fire pit, and beautiful gardens. Renting the house also gives access to a tennis court, a private dock for kayaking or paddleboarding, and a chance to visit with the property’s friendly goats and chickens. The property’s main house sleeps up to 12 but can accommodate as many as 150 guests for potential events. Indoor amenities include a salt cave, a meditation room, a sauna, a hot tub, and a cold plunge. A separate three-bedroom, two-bathroom carriage house on the property can be rented separately or in tandem with the main house.

The Place: Scituate is a delightful seaside town on the South Shore of Massachusetts, halfway between Boston and Plymouth. There’s abundant history to discover here — including one of the country’s oldest lighthouses — plus lots of beaches, seafood a-plenty (of course), and Nona’s, a local favorite for its homemade ice cream.

The House: Enjoy a week at Captain Treat’s Home. The four-bedroom home’s interior was decorated by Happy Menocal and displays part of the owner’s art collection. It also sports new hardwood floors, new appliances, a private, fenced-in yard, and central air. The property comes with deeded beach rights to Sandy Cove and is a short walk to that private beach, the town beach, Cohasset Village, or Cohasset Harbor.

The Place: Cohasset is an idyllic New England town on the South Shore about 20 miles south of Boston. During the summer, it seems like all of Cohasset heads to Sandy Beach, where there’s a full-time lifeguard and a snack shack with sandwiches (including lobster rolls), drinks, and ice cream. Parking is for residents only, but Sandy Beach is a leisurely stroll or a five-minute bike ride from Captain Treat’s Home.
