A decade before architect William Van Alen made his mark on Midtown with the Chrysler Building, he penned something a bit less shiny—but no less enduring—in the Flatiron District. Acting as a commercial building for close to a century, the 16-story edifice at 1107 Broadway housed book publishers, clothing makers, and other concerns, and in the 1960s, conjoined to 200 Fifth Avenue by a ninth-floor sky bridge over 24rd Street, it became one half of the International Toy Center, a sprawling NYC home to toy manufacturers from around the world. Fast forward to 2013: The toys are gone and the old building—now called 10 Madison Square West—is fresh from a sleek residential makeover, work that included the construction of a six-story addition. Among the remade building’s 125 condos, our home of the day is at Apartment 11F, which charms with beamed ceilings, giant windows, a glam Euro kitchen, and four west-facing bedrooms, including one outfitted as a fashionista-ready home office with wall-mounted garment rails. Of course, there’s a leafy view over Madison Square Park, to the gilded New York Life Building and the landmark clock tower at One Madison Avenue. $8.45 million.
