Manhattan
It’s all about the brickwork at this c. 1907 West Village stable turned co-op. Outside, the red stones interlock in a Flemish bond, forming symmetrical window arches across a Romanesque Revival facade. However, the masonry inside this residence really turns up the heat. Exposed bricks span from floor to ceiling in the living room, encompassing the space’s eastern and southern walls and forming the surround and hearth for a wood-burning fireplace. Sink deep into the pocket of warmth formed by the combined powers of the flickering flames and the sunlight pouring in through a trio of oversized windows. The interior bricks span into a dinner party-ready dining room and a primary bedroom boasting an ensuite and a walk-through dressing room.

Hudson Valley
A Frank Lloyd Wright–inspired fireplace sits at the heart of this unusual four-bedroom, three-bathroom house. The structure was originally built in 1909 as a schoolhouse and expanded in 1919 by the Chichester furniture factory so it could accommodate all the children of its employees. Recently, the property underwent a two-year restoration project that married modern convenience with reclaimed period details to create a wonderfully livable and special house. The rooms’ old-growth heart pine floors were originally part of a now-demolished 19th-century Hudson River factory, while the entrance chandelier was salvaged from a Brooklyn church. Many of the schoolhouse lamps are original, period-correct milk glass fixtures that were restored to their best, gleaming selves. There are also custom-made Anderson windows and an efficient ductless mini-split system that keeps the house at a comfortable temperature year-round. Chichester is just minutes away from all that the Catskills have to offer, including Phoencia’s restaurants, coffee shops, and rail biking, as well as the skiing at Hunter and Belleayre.

South Florida
Everything across this West Palm Beach estate’s environs radiates a grandeur, from granular detailing on door hinges to the lakeside pool with a waterfall and swim-in grotto to the over 900-square-foot primary bedroom flaunting a palatial marble ensuite. It’s almost unfair that a home this immensely eye-catching also has a fireplace — and yet. The living room’s gravitas captures you immediately. As the colossal space ascends 28 feet, a fireplace rises to match and meets a coffered gold leaf ceiling at the summit. An immense cast stone mantel features intricate carvings, columns, and moldings from its base to its top. But wait, there’s more: Yes, find a second fireplace — this has a custom marble mantel and intricate lion carvings — upstairs in a chicly wood-paneled billiards room, also boasting a wet bar and a balcony.

Northern California
A gorgeous and groovy Los Altos mountain retreat, this five-bedroom, three-bathroom home is perfectly suited to its location in the hills above Palo Alto. Built in 1970, the house’s architecture showcases and echoes the lush natural surroundings with a flowing layout of spacious rooms graced with vaulted, wood slat ceilings; wood paneled walls; exposed brick throughout; enormous windows; and two striking stone fireplaces, one in the living room and one in the primary bedroom. The property covers nearly an acre, and backs up to the Foothills Nature Preserve. The grounds include an expansive terrace, lush gardens, and a large deck. This is a beautifully preserved example of late 20th-century Californian style, complete with built-in storage, window seats, desks, and a sunken dining room.
