by INHABIT EDITORS
From California to the New York island, this land is your land—with all the fruits that come with it.
If Green Acres is the place to be, we’ve got land spreading far and wide. Large-acreage agricultural properties are once again a growing concern in the age of artisanal agri-ventures, and they’ve never yielded more delicious results. Follow us from your table (or desk) to these six exceptional listings across the Corcoran network, from the North Fork of Long Island to Napa Valley to Hawaii.
East End
425 Jacobs Lane, Southold
The Farm: Live life a little more sustainably at this bucolic Southold property, where you’ll find a sizable produce patch that’s more a micro-farm than jumbo-sized vegetable garden. Nearly three acres of grounds encompass a solar panel-topped barn, a chicken coop, and a small orchard. There’s also a full equestrian riding ring ready for all the galloping, trotting, and whinnying your heart desires. After a long day of horsing around and fine-tuning your green thumb, cool off with a dip in the saltwater pool.
The House: After soaking in the sweeping landscape from the blissful covered porch, you’ll head inside to discover there’s just as much to love inside. The living room sports a wood-burning fireplace with a floor-to-ceiling stone mantle, and invites natural light through plentiful windows. In the cozy den, built-in shelving adds room for everything from books to blankets to bottles. Meanwhile, the lower level’s wine cellar and cheese cave keeps you well-stocked in perpetuity for any and all entertaining scenarios.
Georgia
5 Yancey Road, Arnoldsville
The Farm: Picture the prettiest spring in bloom and you’ll understand the romance of this property, planted with mature pecan, fig, magnolia, and ginkgo trees, as well as its profusions of daffodils, irises, azaleas, dogwoods, camellias, morning glories, and gardenias. So photogenic are these 10 acres of organic vegetables, fruits, and flowers that they’ve even been used as a wedding venue. But these looks aren’t just for show; the soil has been carefully managed with organic practices over the past three years.
The House: The Winfrey-Davis-Hawkins House has six bedrooms and two bathrooms. It was built in 1838 by the family of the first president of the University of Georgia—fitting, as the property is just 15 minutes from downtown Athens. The well-preserved house has 11-foot beadboard ceilings, crown and picture rail molding, and nine antique fireplaces. There’s also a screened-in porch on the side of the house, as well as a separate garage, tractor barn, and hoop houses on the property’s 12 acres—all for under $1 million.
Hawaii
28-184 Honomu Road, Honomu
The Farm: Enjoy the freshest breakfasts around with tropical smoothies made from fruit picked directly from your own mature banana, avocado, passionfruit, coconut, lemon, and pomelo trees and fry up some eggs direct from your chicken coop. It’s easy to revel in the simple life when you cross one of the two foot bridges that arches over the property’s stream for a morning visit to your chicken flock, before wandering back up the gentle hill to this sweet Big Island retreat.
The House: Built in 1966, this unpretentious two-bedroom, two-bathroom house covers 748 feet. It has the jalousie windows typical of the era, but with new window hardware; updated floors and bathroom; newly painted walls; and a whole house fan. Everything you need has been updated, including the main water line from the meter, a newer gas tank and hot water heater, as well as being completely re-wired, with new outlets and upgraded GFCI outlets. Plus, there’s a screened-in porch off of the back of the house.
Catskills
400 Game Farm Road, Catskill
The Farm: The Catskill Game Farm was once the largest private zoo in the country, a place where visitors could stop to see giraffes, lions, goats, camels, and llamas. After its heyday from the 1940s to 1960s ended, the game farm was eventually sold to its current owners in 2012, who have turned the property into a boutique vacation rental and glamping destination. The property spans 193 acres, with 1.5 acres of it zoned for residential development, with multiple water wells.
The House: Currently, the 9,000-square-foot, two-story Giraffe House (with its very high ceilings to accommodate its original long-necked occupants) has six guest rooms, each with an en suite bathroom; a game room; an outdoor hot tub; and a chef’s kitchen. Signage from the game farm’s halcyon days remain, as well as several other outbuildings, including a former ticket booth.
Northern California
3252 Silverado Trail,
Napa
The Farm: Serve dinner with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon made from your own grapes from this 13-acre Napa Valley ranch, with eight of its acres dedicated to a vineyard. There’s additional plantable acreage that backs up to the Napa Creek and that borders the Silver Oak vineyard. The property also includes pens for livestock and poultry, a greenhouse, a large barn and two wells. Currently, the vineyard is professionally managed and the grapes are sold to Hall Wines and Caymus Vineyards.
The House: The estate includes two original farm houses from the 1950s, both of which have two bedrooms and one bathroom. There’s also a private driveway that runs along the side of the vineyard,.
Southern California
2440 Plumosa Court, Vista
The Farm: This half-acre garden has been nurtured for the past 40 years, developing the elevated lot into a lush oasis with mature fruit trees, a small greenhouse, and trellises. The San Diego climate is perfect for the rose bushes, hibiscus, nasturtium, palms, and other well-chosen plants. French doors lead from the back of the property to a small fountain and multiple patio areas, as well as several outdoor seating areas built into the landscape for meals al fresco, or to simply sit and enjoy the surroundings.
The House: The bright and sunny three-bedroom, two-bath house has vaulted beamed ceilings in the living areas and in the bedrooms, with leased solar, RV parking with black and grey water clean out, attached two-car garage, as well as an additional detached two-car garage that could be used as a workshop. The kitchen has newer appliances, plus fun, retro bar-style seating. If that’s still not enough, there’s space on the property to build an ADU with a separate driveway, if desired.
